Skirted Wedding Cake

I had been wanting to make a "Wedding" cake for a long time. I had an idea in my head for a 3 tier cake with a middle tier that was red and sparkley with some kind of red flowers on top. This is what I ended up with. The skirted effect was not in my original design idea but when the fondant wouldnt flatten on the bottom of the cake I improvised and made the while thing skirted. If I did it again I would make the size differences in the tiers larger. Overall I am very pleased, especially since it was my first time making real looking roses!

Halloween Cake!

Work was having a pot luck and I can't cook so I made a cake. It was close enough to Halloween to make a Halloween themed cake. I made a orange velvet cake (just dyed the dough orange) with cream cheese frosting. It is covered in fondant with a tinfoil/toothpick tree convered in fondant.

Chloe's 18th Birthday Cake

My cousin Chloe is going to be 18 already and it is really hard to believe. I remember playing school with her at our grandma's. She was the student along with my clan of stuff animals and now she is going to be graduating high school and going to college. Scary stuff!

Her favorite colors are purple and green. I wanted a desgin different from what I am used to doing so this is what I came up with. The bottom cake is sugar cookie cake and the top cake is white almond sour cream cake and they are both covered in fondant. The poor cake had to be part of a 10 minute long photo shoot with everyone in my family taking pictures of it hehe.

Ashley's Birthday Cake

My best friend since I was 5, Ashley, is celebrating her 25th birthday this week. I headed back home this past weekend so I decided I would make her a cake and bring it to her a bit early. I wanted to make something very special for her and had a ton of ideas running through my mind. I went to the Pink Cake box website as I do everyday and saw this cake. The top tier caught my eye and I thought that it was something she would really like. I did my cousin's cake this weekend too so I needed something pretty simple so I could finish both.

I made the cake Friday night. I asked Ashley her favorite flavor and like many she said chocolate but she also said she liked any kind so I decided to mix it up a bit. I made her a White Almond Sour Cream cake with buttercream frosting. She is one person who I knew that would appreciate a cake with a less than normal name. I handed it off to her and she loved it and texted me later that night to tell me it was delicious! :)

Bows and Numbers

Yesterday I started working on the cake for my cousin Chloe birthday party this Sunday. I have never made numbers out of fondant so I wanted to make sure I had plenty of time. I was making the numbers and went to get wax paper to set them on to dry and I found the box empty besides for this tiny strip. The process of making them went very fast and I am pleased with the outcome. I am quite concerned on how I am going to get the 8 to stand up on the cake, but I will deal with that later. Best thing about this was that I got to used left over fondant from my last cake. It is always nice to reuse!

I also started to make the bow I will be wrapping around the top layer of the cake. It turned out bad several times and I am not completely happy with the final outcome, but then again, this is not a good picture. Since I ran out of wax paper, I let it dry on tin foil, probably not a good idea, but oh well.....

Kitchen Island!

Since I started making cakes, I have been quickly running out of counter space. I have been eyeing this kitchen island for a long time. I decided, finally, a few weeks ago that I was actually going to stick with cakes so I purchased it! It sat in the dining room for awhile before it got put together, but now it is fully essembled and ready for use! I stuffed the drawers full of my baking tools and the shelves hold my pans, the stand mixer and other various items. So far I am in love :)

Famous?

Last month at my family's Labor Day get together, I was talking to my aunt Dena and cousin Chloe. We were talking about Chloe's 18Th birthday party coming up next month. I told her I would do the cake for her and asked her what she liked. She wanted a white cake so I told her about the Sugar Cookie Cake recipe I use. Her and Dena were very excited about it. Chloe's favorite colors are purple and green so I am sticking with those for the theme. I received the invitation in the mail a few days ago and at the bottom it said "Pizza will be served as well as cake by Katie," I guess I am famous now.......well at least to the 15 people who got the invitation!
