Grace's 1st Birthday Cake!

My good friend Jackie's baby Grace just turned 1 on the 30th. She lives about 2 hours away and I am unable to make it to her birthday party so I decided to send her a cake and some outfits as a surpise. This is my first time mailing a cake so I made sure to make all the decorations on the cake flat so they dont get damamged.

The cake is a Strawberry Sourcream Cake with vanilla buttercream. I used Satin Ice fondant for all the decorations. I got the inspiration for this cake from A Taste of Whimsy's Flickr site. She has such a great style!

I used a edible marker to make the stiching on the flowers and luster dust all over the cake for the shimmer.

Baby Belly Bump!

I made this beautiful pregnant belly cake for a wonderful couple welcoming a little girl very soon. The cake is red velvet with cream cheese frosting ( my favorite!). The colors were different shades of pink with a little pearlized white.
I got to use my new edible marker to write the text at the bottom. My hand writting still leave a lot to be desired but it is improving..... Right

I used 2 different sized bowls from Ikea for the bumps. I also got a new flower cutter for all the daises on the dress.

Congratulations!

New Silpat!

So for Valentine's Day, Joseph got me a new Silpat. A Silpat is a silcone mat that you can roll fondant out on. They are lovely since they are easy to clean, non stick but they are expensive. I have another Silpat, I bought it myself when I started making cake and I ruined it probably about 2 months later.

Apparently Silpats are not exacto blade safe? Who knew? I was making my friend Ben a cake, the Horde symbol cake. I printing the Horde symbol off and traced it onto fondant to make the symbol accurate. Well then I used an exacto blade to cut out the image...... Yeah it cut through my mat and so now it has a permants Horde symbol cut through it. It is still usable but if I were to use it to roll out fondant to cover a whole cake it is very likely the symbol would make an apperance on it. But now I have a new one! I will not use an exacto blade on this one, I promise!

Kiss Cake!

Today is Joe's dad's birthday :) Happy Birthday Bob! He is a huge Kiss(the band) fan so it was easy to pick out a design for his cake.
The cake is a Yellow Vanilla Sour Cream Cake with Vanilla Buttercream. Joe was enjoying eating the scraps!

It is not seeming that I am getting better at buttercream cakes. I used the wrong kind of buttercream to get it nice and smooth like how I would like. I did get to pipe stars though and that was my first time. Very easy to do!

We made kiss faces to go on the cake but I think it looked very nice without them so we left them off for now. I am bringing them with the birthday celebration though just in case we feel they are necessary at that point.

Bears Cake

So, as usual, my work had a luncheon. I hadn't made a cake in awhile and it happened to be 2 days before the big Bears Vs. Packers game. So being the good Chicagoan I am I made a Bears cake. Did it real fast like since no one is paying me :)

I tried a new recipes on this one caled "White" Velvet. It basically had White chocolate pudding mix, white chocolate mocha coffee creamer and white chocolate chips in it.
The symbol was made with fondant and I was unhappy with the shade of colors I got so I painted them with food coloring.

Spiderman, Spiderman

This cake was made for my mom's friends grandson Ethan. The little guy loves Spiderman so this was quite appropriate :)

The straight lines are fondant and web parts are royal icing.
The fondant work on this cake was the best I have done so far I believe. A little patience pays off. I don't usually have much but I did for the fondant part of this cake :)

Happy New Year!

I hadn't made a cake in awhile and I was really itching to so I decided to make one for when I went to visit my family in Oshkosh.

I posted picture of it on Facebook when I was done and my cousins saw it. When I pulled up to the house my cousins daughter, Grace, was peeking out the window, checking to see if I had the cake. I was greeted at the doors by my cousins being all excited because the cake actually cake with me. They werent sure if I was bringing it with me or if I had made it for a different occasion.

It was a big hit, even baby Stella loved it!

Grace loved eating the fondant pieces, apparently she is a sugar addict like me!

There was a lot left over but Grace and her brother Sam were more than happy to take a bunch home with them!
This was the first cake I took pictures of with my new camera. I am still terrible at taking pictures but they seem a little better than they did with the camera I bought in college. :)
